Shrewsbury Youth Lacrosse (SYL) holds tryouts for U13 (Grades 5 and 6) and U15 (Grades 7 and 8) Select boys’ lacrosse program prior to the beginning of each season. Tryouts are usually held in March and we sometimes will combine with another local town in order to field a competitive team. In addition, in recent years, we've been able to partner with local towns to create a U11 Supplemental team for the Grades 3 & 4 age group.
If your son would like to tryout for one of our SYL-related Select lacrosse programs, please send an email to
with the following information:
- Player Name
- Jersey # (from previous year’s uniform)
- Parent email address(es)
- Parent phone number(s)
SYL is part of the Massachusetts Bay Youth Lacrosse League (MBYLL) and players choosing to play on a MBYLL Select Lacrosse team must also play and fully participate on our town’s traditional MBYLL team as well. This is an MBYLL mandate, not a town rule, and one which we are required to follow. The MBYLL Select Lacrosse Program practice & game schedules will not conflict with SYL town program weekly practice and game schedules.
It is important to understand that the Select Program is a substantial commitment and one which allows the opportunity to play a lot of lacrosse in the spring. In most cases, it is not feasible to play on both SYL Town/Classic and Select teams, and to also play another sport during the same season. SYL Town/Classic teams will have 1-2 practices per week with 1 game (typically on Sunday afternoon). Select teams will have an additional practice plus a game each week. Select games will usually be played Friday nights or Saturday. It is also important to note that Select players must earn their playing time and that the “equal playing time” philosophy of the Town/Classic program does not apply to the Select program. We plan to keep the Spring Select team cost at an additional $125, as it has been in the past.
